Guide for business owners

Why Do People Click My Ads but Never Buy? 4 Questions to Check Before You Blame the Ad

If people click your ads but don't buy, check four things in this order before you blame the ad platform: what you offer, who it is for, whether your ad and landing page say the same thing, and what you send people who go quiet.

The leak after the click is easy to miss. You run ads to your website, people click, and nobody buys. So you send people to WhatsApp instead. Messages come in, and it feels like it is finally working. Then people say "I'll get back to you" and disappear.

Here is what that leak looks like in numbers. Imagine 200 people message you after your ads and 10 buy, a 5% sale rate. If a proper follow-up wins just 10 more, you have 20 sales from the same ad spend. That is a 10% rate and double the sales. If your business already makes ₦5 million to ₦15 million a month, that gap is worth fixing before you spend more on ads.

I create content for service business owners, and product sellers keep messaging me about the same problem. So every check below has one service example (an interior design studio) and one product example (a leather bag brand). Both are illustrative examples, not real clients.

What are the 4 checks, in order?

CheckYour ad passes when
1. OfferOne ad sells one thing, with a price and a reason to act now.
2. AudienceOne offer solves one problem for one type of person.
3. Message matchYour ad, your content and your landing page show the same offer, price and deadline.
4. Follow-upAnyone who goes quiet gets three short, personal messages.

1. Does your ad sell one specific offer with a price and a deadline?

It should: one ad sells one thing, with a price and a reason to act now.

"Our services" and "New arrivals" are catalogues, not offers. A menu asks the reader to do the choosing, so the easiest choice is to scroll past.

Business (illustrative example)Weak adStrong ad
Lagos interior design studio"Beautiful interiors for your home. Contact us.""Full living room redesign in 3 weeks. From ₦2.5 million. We take 3 new projects this month."
Leather bag brand"New bags just dropped. Shop now.""The Lagos Work Bag. Fits a 15-inch laptop. ₦65,000. Order before Sunday and get a free card holder."

Quick check: Can you say your offer in one sentence, with a price and a reason to act now? Make sure the reason is true. If you say "3 slots left" and you have 12, people notice.

2. Who is the ad for, and what are they worried about?

One offer should solve one problem for one type of person.

When an ad talks to everyone, nobody feels it was written for them. Name the person, and name the worry that stops them from buying.

Example: the interior design studio

Too wide"Homeowners in Lagos."
Specific"Homeowners in Lekki who just got their keys and are afraid of wasting millions on a design that looks wrong."
What the ad says"Get your living room right the first time. Full redesign in 3 weeks, from ₦2.5 million. We take 3 new projects this month."

Example: the leather bag brand

Too wide"Women who like bags."
Specific"Working women in Lagos who carry a laptop every day and are tired of straps that tear."
What the ad says"The Lagos Work Bag: straps built to carry a 15-inch laptop every day. ₦65,000. Order before Sunday and get a free card holder."

Quick check: Can you finish this sentence? "My offer is for ____ who is worried about ____." Filled in, it reads: "My offer is for homeowners in Lekki who are worried about wasting millions on a design that looks wrong." If you are stuck, read the messages people already sent you. Their questions tell you what worries them.

3. Does your landing page repeat the same offer as your ad?

It must: your ad, your content and your landing page have to tell the same story, or visitors guess and leave.

Say your ad promises a living room redesign from ₦2.5 million. The visitor lands on a page that lists ten services and says "Contact us for pricing." They have lost the thread, so they close the page.

If your website builder can only list products, build one simple page for each offer. Let its button take people to the product page or to WhatsApp.

A good landing page has six parts, in this order:

  1. A headline that repeats the offer from the ad
  2. Who it is for
  3. What they get
  4. Proof: real photos, reviews or customer messages
  5. The same price and deadline as the ad
  6. One button

Quick check: Put your ad and your page side by side. The offer, price and deadline should match word for word.

4. What do I send on WhatsApp when someone stops replying?

Send three short, personal messages: a question straight away, a reason to act the next day, and a last call on the final day of your offer.

Write all three before the enquiries arrive. "I'll get back to you" is often a polite way of saying "I'm not sure yet." A link sent to everyone does not fix that, because it gives no reason to act now. Channel posts are fine for announcements, but anyone who asked about your offer needs a short, personal message with one true reason to reply today.

Copy and adapt the messages below. The timing is a starting point to test, not a rule.

StepWhen to sendStudio messageBrand message
1. First reply: ask one questionStraight awayHi Amaka, thanks for reaching out! Which room are you redesigning, and when would you like it finished?Hi Tunde, thanks for your message! Which bag were you looking at, and is it for work or for travel?
2. Second message: one true reason to actThe next dayHi Amaka, only 1 of my 3 project slots this month is still open, and I can hold it for you until Friday. Would you like me to book your consultation?Hi Tunde, the free card holder with the Lagos Work Bag is only for orders placed before Sunday. Shall I send you the payment details?
3. Third message: last call, no pressureOn the last day of your offerHi Amaka, this is my last message. At the end of today I will give the last slot to the next client. If you still want it, reply "yes" and I will hold it for you.Hi Tunde, the free card holder offer ends tonight. If the Lagos Work Bag is still on your mind, reply "yes" and I will send the payment details. If not, no stress.

Two more habits help:

  • Reply within 15 minutes. Answer every new enquiry between 8am and 8pm, because every hour of silence gives the customer time to message a competitor. If you cannot always manage that, Meta Business Agent, the AI assistant built into WhatsApp Business, can answer first questions for you. Upturnflow has a free setup guide.
  • Add one upsell. Once someone pays, offer one add-on under ₦5,000 within 24 hours, such as a leather care kit.

Keep every limit and deadline true.

How do I know if my fixes are working?

Track one number every week: the share of people who messaged you who then paid.

Count the people who messaged you and the people who paid, then divide. If 200 people messaged and 10 paid, your rate is 5%. Change one thing at a time, and check the number again after a week, so you know what worked.

Common questions about ads that get clicks but no sales

Why do people message me on WhatsApp after my ad but never buy?

People who message you are interested but not yet sure, and "I'll get back to you" is often how they say it. They buy when your next message gives them one clear question to answer and one true reason to act today. Send a question straight away, a reason to act the next day, and a last call on the final day of your offer.

How soon should I follow up a WhatsApp enquiry that goes quiet?

Reply to every new enquiry within 15 minutes between 8am and 8pm. If the person goes quiet, follow up once the next day and once more on the last day of your offer. Treat that timing as a starting point and test it against your own sales rate.

Should I send my ad traffic to my website or to WhatsApp?

Either can work if the offer, price and deadline match your ad. A landing page built for one offer, with a button that opens WhatsApp, gives you both. If you send people straight to WhatsApp, have your three follow-up messages ready before the first enquiry arrives.

What should a landing page for one ad include?

A landing page for one ad has six parts, in this order: a headline that repeats the offer from the ad, who it is for, what they get, proof such as real photos, reviews or customer messages, the same price and deadline as the ad, and one button.

You do not need more traffic. You need less confusion.
